The Debut Authors Festival now has its programme online. The organisers say the lack of poets this year is down to a lack of debut poets. All the more disappointing, then, that participation in the unpublished writers jam session is open to prose writers only.

A lack of debut poets? What can they possibly mean?

Well, that was more or less my reaction. The person I mailed said: “Yes, it’s a shame, but there aren’t that many newly published poets to chose from. I’m thrilled that the very marvellous Helen Farish can come though. … All the best, and lots of luck with your poetry – I do try to support it wherever I can.” I suppose we just need to support the sole poet on the bill and keep bloody writing.
